When looking for espresso beans, we often head to Guatemala – here we have a combination of the (heretical) classic with fruit, making the espresso full, balanced and also suitable for combining with milk. This time we went to El Naranjo, a well-known farm run by the smug Jose Moreira.

Heretical opinions
Peter: “I’ve been scrolling through coffees from Jose on the table for the fourth year, so I’ve had plenty of time to form an opinion of them, and the verdict is: always sweet. A beautiful example of Acatenango’s terroir from a slightly lower altitude. The so-called crowd pleaser.”

PRODUCER
Jose is a smug guy, growing coffee in the heart of the Acatenango region. His El Naranjo, inherited from his father, celebrated its centennial in 2020! The name in turn comes from the oranges once grown here. A huge part of the farm is a natural reserve with a beautiful forest full of endemic plant species and, growing in places, robusta trees!
TREATMENT
Washed from Jose doesn’t quite fit into the framework of the “classic” scheme, as the coffees go to the pulper only a day after harvesting. The reason for this is the relatively low temperature and humidity in this microregion, which translates into slower fermentation processes. Jose noted that coffee that will lie like this before washing has more complexity and fruitiness. After skinning, the grains dry on the patio.
